Why Is India Delaying Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s International Debut?

India’s delay in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s international debut is mainly driven by a cautious, long-term approach from the team management. Despite his exceptional talent and strong domestic and IPL performances, selectors and coaches prefer to protect him from early pressure at just 15. Established players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma retain their places due to experience, past contributions, and team balance. The management also emphasizes a structured “process” and hierarchy in Indian cricket, ensuring youngsters earn their spot gradually. Coaches like Gautam Gambhir and Ryan ten Doeschate believe he is ready but still needs controlled exposure. Overall, the decision reflects prioritizing stability, experience, and player development over immediate hype, aiming to safeguard Sooryavanshi’s long-term international career and mental readiness for high-pressure matches.

The teenage sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, burst upon the cricketing scene in 2025, when he debuted in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 19. He announced himself in a style, hitting a six off his very first ball.

However, his knock against Gujarat Titans (GT) that year was the one which caught the attention of the world. He scored a blistering century off 35 deliveries against an international-quality GT bowling attack. He registered the second fastest IPL ton in history.

The wonderkid was also selected in India squad for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup squad, where he was the Player of the Tournament, scoring 439 runs in 7 innings. He scored 175 (80) in the final, registering the second highest score by an Indian in Youth ODIs.

The 15-year-old sensation earned his maiden T20I call-up for India after his splendid IPL 2026 season, where he scored 776 runs at a blazing strike rate of 237. He was the Orange Cap winner and also won the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

He was a part of the squad against Ireland, and is also present in England for the ongoing T20I series; but is yet to embark upon his international cricket journey.

After the whitewash against Ireland, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the media. He was asked about the exclusion of Sooryavanshi from both the matches, to which he responded,

“He (Sooryavanshi) is absolutely ready to play international cricket, there is no doubt about that but also Sanju Samson is a guy who went a long way to win us the World Cup three months ago.” He added, “We are all excited to see Vaibhav play but he has to go through the same process but certainly no question about how good he is.”

In the pre-match interaction ahead of the England T20I series, the skipper Shreyas Iyer was also asked about the possibility of the youngster making his maiden international appearance, to which he said,

“We have to build that opportunity and security, so that each individual has confidence going forward into the tournaments. The players who have won the last World Cup definitely have an idea of how to play T20, and continuously they have been the main pillars of that format, so it’s very important to back them.”

It is clear from these two statements that the team management is intending to give a long rope to their T20I regulars and not fix something that is not broken. They have repeatedly affirmed about trusting their main players.

However, lack of runs from the bat of Sanju Samson is raising questions about Sooryavanshi replacing him sooner or later. Many experts have also emphasised that India should utilise the wonderkid at the peak of his powers.

The young phenomenon is in rich form currently, scoring runs in important clashes, against quality bowlers, and on varying kind of pitches. Moreover, this could impact the confidence of the young boy.

The T20I series against Ireland was the best stage for India to launch this star, however, the next best time is against England. This is an important series for the self-belief of the team, and Sooryavanshi could add immense value to the side.
