ENG vs PAK: England are set to welcome Pakistan for a three-match Test series in August and September 2027, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter in their red-ball cricket journey. Joe Root has returned as Test captain for a second stint, bringing leadership experience to the team.
Adding to the changes, Stephen Fleming has been appointed as England’s new Test head coach. Following Ben Stokes’ retirement, the series against Pakistan will be England’s first Test assignment under the new leadership setup.
The opening Test will begin on August 19 at Headingley in Leeds, followed by matches at Lord’s and Edgbaston. The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced a 16-member squad for the first two Tests, featuring several surprise selections and the return of key players. England will look to improve their position in the World Test Championship 2025–27, where they currently sit seventh.

Joe Root will captain England’s star-studded Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan. However, young batter Jacob Bethell has been ruled out after suffering an injury, which also forced him to miss the ongoing Hundred Men’s 2026 tournament. England have brought back Ollie Pope as his replacement and backup option.
Dan Lawrence has earned a Test recall after a two-year absence, with his last appearance coming against Sri Lanka at The Oval in September 2024. He is expected to bat at No. 6, while Jamie Smith will move down to No. 7 in the batting order.
Jordan Cox has kept his place after making his Test debut against New Zealand and will take the No. 3 spot. Fast bowlers Sam Cook and Brydon Carse have also returned to the squad.
Rehan Ahmed is the notable omission from the previous New Zealand series squad. England will aim to improve their position in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, while Pakistan enter the series after a 1-1 draw against West Indies.
