Ben Stokes has finally opened up about his future plans after making the shocking decision to retire from international cricket. The former England Test captain announced his retirement after the third and final Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, bringing an end to a remarkable career filled with fearless performances, leadership, and unforgettable moments.

The announcement came after a challenging period for Stokes, including a difficult week following a nightclub incident in London. However, the all-rounder explained that his decision was mainly influenced by mental and physical exhaustion after spending more than four years handling the demanding role of England’s Test captain.

Following Stokes’ departure, Joe Root was appointed as the new Test captain, while many fans and experts believed Stokes could make a comeback, especially with England preparing for the upcoming Ashes series in Australia. Speculation grew over whether the aggressive all-rounder would return for such a major challenge.

However, Stokes has now broken his silence and revealed that he is looking ahead to a new phase of his cricket journey. While he remains passionate about the sport, he admitted that his focus has shifted towards managing his workload and exploring future opportunities beyond international playing duties. His legacy as one of England’s greatest modern cricketers remains firmly established.

In a recent interaction on the Love of Cricket podcast, Stokes revealed that he would like to return to cricket as a coach. He revealed that he is currently pursuing Level 3 coaching.

He said, “I know what I want to do in terms of staying within the game, which is to be a coach. Would I love to be the coach of England one day? Absolutely. I just really like the idea of being, again, like, in some form of leadership away from playing.”

Stokes also wished Root luck for his second stint as English Test captain under new head coach Stephen Fleming. Notably, Stokes has also worked closely with Fleming during his time with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

The 35-year-old ruled out any possibility of his return for the Ashes next year. He said, “I never once thought, ‘I’m just going to give it up and just keep going as a player. I’m 35. If I’m not going to be captain, I think I’d find it tough to do it.”

After Stokes’ retirement, the ECB also sacked Brendon McCullum from Test and named Fleming the new coach. England are scheduled to face Pakistan in three tests starting on August 19.
